James Alan Blumenthal matters for establishing behavioral approaches to cardiovascular care and depression as a bridge between clinical psychology and medicine. He is J. P. Gibbons Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Senior Fellow in Duke’s Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. He received his PhD from the University of Washington, completed a pre-doctoral clinical psychology internship at Duke in 1972-73, and later returned for a post-doctoral fellowship under Redford Williams. Blumenthal served Duke University School of Medicine for 45 years before retiring in February 2024. His work addressed cardiac rehabilitation, coronary artery disease, hypertension, depression, and the effects of diet and exercise on cognitive impairment.
