Victor J. Dzau matters as a cardiovascular physician-scientist and academic health leader whose work spans vascular biology, health-system leadership, and global health. He is James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Pathology, Chancellor Emeritus at Duke University, and President of the National Academy of Medicine. His research interests include cardiology and molecular and genomic vascular receptor biology, with earlier work on renin-angiotensin biology, ACE inhibitors, tissue angiotensin systems, and vascular gene therapy. His career included cardiology training at Massachusetts General Hospital, leadership roles at Stanford and Harvard, and service as Duke’s Chancellor for Health Affairs and President and CEO of Duke University Health System from 2004 to 2014. Dzau has also described growing up as a refugee of the Chinese Civil War and advocates for health equity and global health.
