Stephen M. Canfield is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at CUMC and a board-certified allergist/immunologist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, where he is Associate Program Director of the Allergy/Immunology fellowship and directs the immunology section of the preclinical medical student course. He earned a PhD in immunology and microbiology and then an MD at Columbia, trained in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia where he was chief medical resident (1995-1996), did postdoctoral work in T cell biology with Seth Lederman, and completed Allergy and Immunology fellowship at Columbia with Paul Rothman, practicing since 2001. His laboratory work described a laminin receptor on activated T cells and a p38 MAPK-dependent IL-4 signaling pathway, and he developed a murine model of IL-4 receptor alpha polymorphisms linked to asthma; his translational work with the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health examined IgE, allergen exposure and tobacco smoke in NYC Head Start children. He held an NIAMS K08 (1999-2005) and has received Columbia's Bohmfalk (2015) and Ewig (2011) teaching awards and is a fellow of the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy.
