Robert Sanders Williams is a physician-scientist and academic leader whose career spans molecular biology, cardiology, medical education, and research-institute leadership. He is Professor of Medicine at Duke University, where his laboratory studies fundamental mechanisms of cell regulation relevant to human health and disease and develops technologies applicable to clinical medicine. Williams earned his M.D. from Duke in 1974 and completed postdoctoral training there. After initially pursuing law, he turned to medicine after becoming fascinated by molecular biology. His research includes calcium-dependent gene regulation in myocyte hypertrophy and remodeling. He served as founding dean of Duke-NUS Medical School from 2005 to 2008 and was president of the Gladstone Institutes from 2010 through 2017.
