Willard N. Applefeld is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke and a Duke Health cardiologist and critical care specialist. His clinical focus includes critical care cardiology, structural echocardiography, and pulmonary hypertension. He studies the intersection of cardiovascular disease and critical illness, including cardiac function during severe illness and effects on other organ systems. His education includes George Washington University, an M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2015, internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins from 2015 to 2018, NIH clinical and research training from 2018 to 2022, critical care medicine training at NIH in 2021, and cardiovascular disease fellowship at Duke from 2021 to 2024. He has also contributed to physician education through a mechanical ventilation tweetorial series and a SEEDS scholarly project.
