Monica Goldklang is an Assistant Professor of Medicine (in Anesthesiology) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, a pulmonary and critical care physician-scientist, Director of the Alpha-1 Foundation Clinical Resource Center at Columbia (since 2022, with a practice of more than 125 alpha-1 patients) and Co-Clinical Director of the Center for LAM and Rare Lung Diseases. She completed undergraduate, medical school and internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan, then the Columbia Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship (2008–2012), where her project studied BK channels in murine asthma, followed by postdoctoral research in Jeanine D'Armiento's laboratory. Her research has used smoke-exposure models, SPECT/CT molecular imaging of apoptosis and RAGE, and clinical studies of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, including the Alpha-1 Biomarkers Consortium study she first-authored in 2025 and site-PI roles in Arrowhead, Vertex and Grifols alpha-1 and COVID trials; she held an NHLBI K08 on smoke-induced alterations in ion channel function and Alpha-1 Foundation research and Gordon L. Snider Scholar awards. She is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, received the Alpha-1 Foundation's 2024 Shillelagh Award, and speaks and moderates regularly at the Alpha-1 Foundation National Conference.
