Robert J. Lefkowitz is a Duke physician-scientist whose pioneering work advanced understanding of receptors, especially G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and contributed to medication development. He shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and became Duke University’s first Nobel Prize winner. After earning a BA in chemistry from Columbia College in 1962 and an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1966, he completed clinical training and worked as a clinical and research associate at NIH. He joined Duke in 1973, where his team demonstrated beta-adrenergic receptors in 1974 with postdoctoral researcher Marc Caron. His Duke appointments include medicine, biochemistry, pathology, and chemistry, alongside cardiac biochemistry research, Duke Cancer Institute membership, and association with the Duke Initiative for Science & Society. He has mentored more than 200 trainees.
