Byron Thomashow is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, an attending at NewYork-Presbyterian, medical director of the NYP Lung Volume Reduction Program and medical (co-)director of the Jo-Ann LeBuhn Center for Chest Disease. A Columbia P&S graduate who trained at St. Luke's-Roosevelt and Harlem Hospital, he co-founded the COPD Foundation in 2004, chaired its board for ten years, became its Chief Medical Officer in July 2018 and is now listed as Co-Founder and Senior Medical Advisor; he also sits on the Foundation's Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee and co-chaired the COPD USA conference series and readmission summits. He was a steering-committee member and Columbia site co-PI for the National Emphysema Treatment Trial, and his publications span LVRS outcomes, COPD comorbidities, the COPD Foundation's diagnosis and management guide, the CAPTURE COPD case-finding tool (through its 2023 JAMA validation) and the US Bronchiectasis Research Registry. Columbia established the Byron M. Thomashow Professorship of Medicine in 2006; his awards include the 2013 ATS Public Advisory Roundtable Excellence Award, the 2016 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award and the 2018 COPD Foundation JW Walsh Visionary Award.
