Brian T. Bethea is a cardiac-surgery leader whose work centers on minimally invasive and transcatheter treatment for valvular and structural heart disease. He is Chief of Cardiac Surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and regional chief of outreach for the Baltimore region. His clinical interests include TAVR, transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement, and multi-arterial coronary revascularization. After earning his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1999, he completed general surgery residency in 2005 and cardiac surgery fellowship in 2008 at Johns Hopkins. He has participated in major U.S. TAVR trials and early feasibility trials for transcatheter mitral procedures, serves as selection chair for the Tendyne trial, and teaches valve techniques internationally.
