Training and applying
Interns and categorical residents spend up to six weeks on inpatient or elective rotations, followed by two weeks in ambulatory or elective settings. The structure separates inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. It does not mean six weeks of continuous call or two weeks off.

For 2026-27, Penn says signals and geographic preferences inform interview invitations, but not ranking after an interview. Perelman students and Penn away rotators are expected to signal too. The program explicitly values teamwork, professionalism and growing patient-care responsibility; roster backgrounds do not reveal an admissions cutoff.

A scholarly project is required, but Penn defines scholarship broadly: research, literature reviews, case reports, book chapters and community-service activities can qualify. This is different from the dedicated Physician Scientist Pathway. Ask about available mentors and protected time for the project you want to pursue.

Penn's posted salary table, effective October 1, 2026, lists annual PGY-1 pay of $78,638.18, PGY-2 of $81,639.91 and PGY-3 of $85,608.45. The program says residents do not take home call; jeopardy rotations require arrival within 60 minutes when called. This does not establish the number of overnight shifts.
