Studying at Perelman

Perelman describes a review that weighs academic strength alongside personal attributes, life experience and obstacles overcome. It does not describe one required applicant personality or background. Treat this as the school's stated approach, not a formula for admission or an inferred preference based on the current class.

Core 1 is pass/fail. Core 2 clerkships use Honors, High Pass, Pass and Fail; Core 3 sub-internships and electives also use those tiers. Scholarly Pursuit is pass/fail. Calling the entire MD program pass/fail would be misleading. These curriculum pages do not settle whether internal class rankings are used.

Core 2 organizes the required clerkships into four blocks spanning medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, neurology, psychiatry, emergency medicine and specialty services. Core 1 includes clinical skills alongside the sciences, so patient-facing learning is not confined to clerkships.

Yes. Penn provides a research-opportunities database, mentor-finding resources and a summer-research guide for medical students. Core 3 includes a faculty-supervised Scholarly Pursuit project in a laboratory, clinical or community setting. A combined degree or research year can fulfill that requirement. Available projects and funding need to be checked with the mentor.

Both routes exist. Penn describes need-based school aid and a separate Twenty-First Century Scholars program offering full-tuition scholarships. All accepted students are considered for that scholarship program. A full-tuition award does not automatically cover living costs and other expenses; use your actual aid offer to compare net cost.

Penn publishes a 2026 specialty-outcomes breakdown spanning medical, surgical and other fields. It describes destinations by specialty, not your probability of matching or the quality of each residency. Read it alongside the school's Match Day evidence, and keep graduate outcomes separate from the medical schools represented among Penn's current residents.

Penn says applicants with a bachelor's degree from outside the US or Canada must complete a year of full-time science and math coursework classified as BCPM by AMCAS before applying. Canadian institutions are exempt from that additional year. This is an academic requirement, not a statement about immigration status or financial-aid eligibility.
